After living in Nicaragua for a long time, the chance to test my convictions was at hand. As many of you know, I have been raving about the health care in Nicaragua for more than a decade. I even subjected my then 10-year-old daughter to the knife here for some foot surgery. But alas, my time came and I had to have some work done; and what I had been preaching for so long was proven true in a personal experience. Let me start at the beginning of the story.

Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas
On Thursday, February 18, my father, David Johnson, underwent a stem cell procedure at the Hospital Metropolitano. The entire process, from the first visit to understand the procedure, to the pre-operative tests and visits, to the day of the surgery everyone performed with the highest standards. My father entered the surgery with complete confidence in his medical team and the hospital and is extremely pleased he chose Hospital Metropolitano.
We would like to thank Dr. Salas, Dr. Gomez, Dr. Morales and Dr. Bravo for their attention to every last detail in my father’s delicate case and their sincere interest in doing what was best for their patient. Roberto Martinez, the coordinator from the Stem Cell Center served as an outstanding Ambassador, ensuring all our appointments ran smoothly. His excellent English was critical, as my father does not speak Spanish.
Our sincere appreciation and congratulations go out to you, the doctors, nurses, administrators and entire staff that make this an exceptional health institution.
With sincere thanks,
Michelle Johnson (daughter) & David L. Johnson (patient)

I had a great experience at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
The attendants from the Medical Tourism Department were wonderful and helpful in explaining the process.
The Doctors and nurses were very professional and efficient with good bedside manner, specially Dr. Christian Uriarte, he made a great deal of effort to make sure that I was comfortable and explained all my test results very clearly, even for a non-native Spanish speaker like me.
Maureen W., England
We were on a coach trip from the cruise ship Candard’s Queen Victoria, when I fell and broke my hip. We were taken to the Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
When we arrived we were immediately impressed and felt at ease and cared by all the staff.
Tests and X-Rays were carried out quickly and efficiently.
We were soon admitted to a room, where my husband could stay with me and I had an operation the following day.
Throughout our stay we were treated with kindness, understanding and professionalism, always with a smile in the face.
We do not speak any Spanish, but the nurses were so friendly and we managed to communicate well.
We would like to thank Dr. El Azar and the staff of every Department in the Hospital for their care and help.
This is an outstanding establishment.
Marlene G. and Josh G., United States
All of the staff from admissions, ER, ICU and Medical Tourism was compassionate.
The Hospital is an ultra-modern facility with first class rooms.
While our stay was not planned, it was an enjoyable experience.
David M, United States
I was very impressed by the staff at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
On February I had an Executive Checkup and it was very complete.
I plan to return.
Bernice M, Canada
The Hospital is new and the treatment is first class.
They take you step by step before your operation.
On the morning of surgery, my blood work was done, then an EKG and finally, a consultation with an Internist.
After having positive results, you are taken to surgery.
Spending the night the staff where very attentive and I would recommend this service.
Katherine W, USA
I was on vacation in San Juan Del Sur a few weeks ago when I fell and broke my leg. I came to the Hospital Metropolitan Vivian Pellas where I received excellent and compassionate care. Thanks to Dr El Azar and his surgical team for putting my bones back together, thanks to the staff and nurses who made me very comfortable and thanks to Marlon who translated important documents and assisted with arranging transportation. I had a very positive experience at your hospital.
Daniel M., Canada
I have had a wonderful experience, even though I speak no Spanish.
Everyone has been patient, helpful and kind.
I would recommend the Vivian Pellas Hospital to anyone interested in Cosmetic Surgery.
Love this place!
My name is Ryan McVay, I was recently in an accident and had the abrupt misfortune of severing multiple toes, having almost been parted with my big toe on my left foot.
It is always frightening suffering such an injury, suffering it in a different country (one which you do not fluently speak the native language), makes it even more frightening still.
Our fears were soon put to rest, as we came to Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
The facilities were spotless and immaculately clean.
The nurses were knowledgeable and friendly.
The Hospital was very accommodating and helpful.
I was very impressed.
Thank you for their efforts.
I quickly began recovering and was able to head back to the States as soon as possible.
I feel very lucky to have found this wonderful facility and would highly recommend HMVP to anyone unfortunate enough to have been subjected to an injury on vacation.
I trust them with my life.
Muchas gracias a todos!
Sara D., USA
I am very glad that Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pella offers this service.
It was extremely helpful for me.
The Medical Tourism Staff were great and made the process very easy.
I would recommend this Hospital for foreigners for any sort and medical treatment.
The care is equal or better to what you will find in the States.
Thank you so much Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pella!
We had a really bad accident, involving two of our family members.
The help here at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas was excellent; our Doctor was so knowledgeable and so helpful.
His English was excellent.
The Medical Tourism staff (our translator/interpreter), was amazing from the moment we came in the doors.
We could not be more pleased.
We feel blessed by all of the help and the excellent care we got while being here.
In October of 2013, while backpacking in Nicaragua, I experienced the "traveler's nightmare". While volcano boarding near Leon, I broke my leg and was taken to a local hospital, which then transferred me to Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas in Managua. I was instantly put at ease by the staff at Metropolitano. The hospital was spotless, physicians and nurses had an impeccable bedside manner and tests were done quickly and efficiently. I am a practicing nurse anesthetist in USA, and I can't help paying attention to details and competency of staff at any hospital. I had surgery and spent several days recovering at the hospital, before going home to the USA. The care I received was excellent from the moment I came through the door, until the moment I left. My orthopedic surgeon performed the operation perfectly, giving me every chance to recover my fitness and movement. All the nurses who took care of me were kind, sensitive and attentive. Cleaning, nutrition and other staff went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. Arlen Perez, the international case manager, was nothing short of a miracle worker. Having an accident in a foreign country, away from family and friends, is not a pleasant experience, but she made it as smooth and painless as it could have been. Every day she was my translator, advisor, liason between me and the doctors, me and the insurance company. She solved all the administrative matters, taking all my worries and concerns away. If I ever have an accident while traveling again, I hope I can be so lucky to find a hospital as great as this
Roger A., Costa Rica, United Kingdom
I travelled from Costa Rica for a colonoscopy and gall bladder removal.
From my very first inquiry up to my discharge, my experience was completely wonderful.
My contacts from the Medical Tourism Department, were attentive and responsive, never making me wait for any answer to any question I had. They were fantastic in making me feel ease every step of the way.
The Executive from this Department even made me feel a bit guilty walking all over the Hospital, translating every consultation and helping with all the Spanish-language paperwork, since she was only six weeks away from having a baby.
The Manager, accepted a call from me after-hours and was, as always, completely caring and helpful.
With emails and telephone, they both made communication with my girlfriend in Costa Rica very easy.
The Doctors were all very understanding, and communicative, with good bedside manner and made me feel like I didn’t have to worry about anything.
The Hospital room and nurses made my stay very comfortable. The Hospital food was good – in fact, I could have stayed another night.
All in all, I can’t recommend this Hospital highly enough.
This private Hospital is as first-class as you’ll find anywhere and is very affordable. Rarely does anyone rave about their hospital stay, but I can’t stop recommending this institution to everyone.
Hopefully I will never need hospitalization again, but if I do, this is my number one choice.
Hats off to Vivian Pellas for everything she is doing. I believe a lot of money is going towards a free child burn unit. First class.
Ps. If anyone wants to contact me personally for more information, my email is: email@example.com. Many thanks to the Hospital and all its staff.

Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas staff are very helpful and very through.
All of our needs were met in a very professional manner.
We will be returning for future follow up and consultations.
Glen R., Canadian
Excellent staff, Doctor and service.
Communication is the key, no need for worry about details.
The Hospital is excellent, well-staffed, professional and scrupulously clean.
I would highly recommend it to anyone for surgical needs.
Gail W., United States
The Executive Checkup was a smooth and professional experience.
I had a full blood workup, EKG + Stress test, Pap smear, mammogram, chest x-ray and abdominal ultrasound, all together with a consultation with a Gynecologist and Internist.
We added a consultation with and Orthopedist and a foot s-ray.
All done in one day for under U$ 500.00.
The Hospital is a modern facility, staffed by professional.
The Medical Tourism Department made the day exceptionally easy.

Before surgery, my weight was 195 and at 4’11 and I felt that something had to be done. I had been suffering with obesity for almost 15 years. During those years I tried many weight loss methods to decrease my weight. At the beginning everything would give me good results but after a while I recovered all the weight back and double. I did not feel comfortable with myself, I did not like how my clothes would fit, and I got very depressed... My self-esteem was extremely low. I always felt exhausted and tired. At the end of 2012, my mother was very concern and had suggested for me to have the gastric sleeve done. I was almost pre-diabetic and my liver enzymes were very high, had fatty liver. He recommended for me to consider going to Mexico and have the gastric-sleeve procedure done there because of the price. After researching different physicians, this Doctor kept popping up and had great feedback from patients and being from Nicaragua was a definite plus since I am also from there.
Then once I decided I wanted to have this Doctor do the procedure, I wrote him an email. I must admit I was very surprised when the doctor actually answered me. He took the time to answer all my questions and ease all my doubts.
I arrived on June 12th, 2013 and was scheduled to have my pre-op and finally being able to meet the people that I have been emails for month the Doctor and the Medical Tourism department staff. Upon arriving I was greeted by Arlen, from the International Department, an incredible person! She was very warm and understanding. She guided me and helped me throughout my stay and beyon. The service I received in the Metropolitano Vivian Pellas hospital was beyond amazing and their package price the room was always so clean and very nice.My gastric sleeve was performed with no complications. I never expected to receive the services that I received. I honestly have no words on how to thank the whole team that was there the day of my surgery, from the nurses, medical staff, physicians and most importantly your international department. I felt that because of everyone my recovery went so well.
It has now been a little over a month and I have lost 30 lbs and I feel amazing! It’s been a hard journey but well worth it. My health has improved so much all of my labs have come back normal; I feel like total different person with more energy and desire to continue with my new life. The doctor and the Medical Tourism team are still pampering me. I am happy to say that I am very satisfied with the decision that i made and I do not regret it at all going to have the procedure done. I highly recommend the Metropolitano Vivian Pellas Hospital.

Five months ago, I visited the Hospital for an intervention and tests. I was very satisfied with the treatment by all of the team. I really felt tended to. They are kind and dedicated. The entire team, including nurses, doctors, administration and the Medical Tourism team helped me before I travelled and up until my treatment ended. They practically did everything for me. The prices are very accessible and the comfort the Hospital gives is great!.

I really am grateful for all the care and surgical treatment I received from the Doctora and her team. A sudden hysterectomy is a scary thing, but the Doctora was outstanding and patient in explaining procedures, all the way to the successful outcome of the surgery. I genuinely felt her caring for her patient and cannot think of any other doctor I'd rather have this surgery with!.. The nurses were great, the International team was awesome. Thank you! I would highly recommend (Hospital Metropolitano) Vivian Pellas to my friends willing to come to Nicaragua for treatments.

We were treated very well at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas. Everyone went above and beyond what we expected and they were very friendly, food was good. I have been doing health travel tours since 2005. Recently, I added Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas to my list because it was awarded JCI accreditation. In august of 2012 I arranged a trip for a client and myself to utilize the facility. The Medical Tourism department was as helpful and professional a liaison as I've ever encountered. They bent over backwards to make the experience as seamless as possible and assisted us every step of the way. The facility and staff exceeded my expectations. Clean, modern and professional it was an overwhelmingly superior experience.
I look forward to all the tourism I can direct their way without hesitation.
Eric C., United States
What an incredible experience!. The cost savings was expected but the quality of care and customer service far exceeded all my expectations. Thanks to the Doctor for a procedure well done and to the Medical Tourism department for their amazing personal attention. I would not hesitate to recommend Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas.
Jim C., MD, United States
As a physician working for the United States Peace Corps I have had the opportunity to review many facilities abroad. I can say, without hesitation, that Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas offers a quality of service that is on par with any hospital I have encountered. I have had the opportunity to see, firsthand, the quality care that is provided at their inpatient facilities and have been a patient in the surgical unit. I believe these services are truly a tremendous value to the region.

My husband and I are thrilled to be a part of Club de la Salud. If we could rate the service it would be triple A for attentive, assured, and accommodating service. Health care is the main concern of foreigners retiring abroad. With the MedicalTourism department's valuable help, we are convinced that Club de la Salud will meet all of our medical needs with professional, compassionate, and excellent care.

My son was critically injured in a motorcycle accident while he was visiting Nicaragua. He sustained a head injury and orthopedic injuries and spent over a week and a half at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas. The surgeons, doctors, nurses, administration and everyone we interacted with were compassionate and caring during a tremendously difficult time for all of us. The medical attention, support and commitment experienced at Metropolitano was outstanding.

I would, without reservation, recommend the Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas to anyone seeking skilled, kind, thorough, clean and efficient care for the procedures offered. We went to Nicaragua for my 83-year-old Dad to have a double hernioplasty performed. The Medical Tourism Staff and the Surgeon, exceeded our expectations in every way. Financial quotes provided in advance were exactly what we were charged and all questions and concerns were addressed promptly with care and kindness. Also, the hospital administrative and nursing staff were very patient with our limited Spanish speaking abilities. The entire process and experience was not only successful, but was far more emotionally and spiritually rewarding than any we had in the States. Everything went as planned and my Father is now doing fine.
Craig O., United States
The Doctors and staff at Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas are all professional and courteus. This Hospital is as clean and modern as any hospital I have seen in the USA. I am very pleased with the care my son have received here. My son started swimming again one month after his clavicle surgery and was pretty sore, but he did well. On the last weekend of October was the the Regional Swimming Championship and he won first place swimming the 100 yard backstroke - see photo. On the second weekend of November he is going to be in Juneau, Alaska competing at the State Championship. We appreciate all the excellent care he received at the Hospital. I have told many people about our experiences there and have encouraged many to consider Nicaragua for medical care.

I had an excellent experience at Hospital Metropolitano. I decided to try an Executive Physical and was so impressed by the service, staff and quality of the facility that I returned for a colonoscopy. As a former hospital Administrator in Florida, I appreciate the importance of the Joint Commission Accreditation. The hospital and equipment are top-notch. My internist here in Florida was impressed by the medical records from Hospital Metropolitano. Also, as a non-Spanish speaker, I was guided through the procedures by a helpful English speaking guide. The Hotel you recommended was also first rate.
Gabriela R., United States

I was treated at the Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas starting on January 27th 2012 for a lack of blood supply in the right coronary artery. The hospital medical team inserted two stents and the follow up treatment was excellent. My cardiologist at the hospital is very competent doctor and a wonderful caring man. Other staff at the hospital were also very kind and helpful. The Medical Tourism department was particularly helpful in many ways and their assistance is much appreciated.
Thank you to everyone. Sincerely,

This is part of a series in which Americans age 50-plus profile their adopted overseas locales. Send us your suggestions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Each new day in this nearly 500-year-old city is greeted with a symphony of crowing roosters, the clippity-clop of horse-drawn carriages, and barking dogs. My wife and I moved here, to Granada, Nicaragua, three years ago after living in Costa Rica for two years.
Located on the northern shore of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is a flat city of narrow streets and endless, brightly colored walls, some of which are hundreds of years old. These walls are interspersed with occasional doors, some fancy, some plain, behind which can be anything from a palace to an earthen-floored shack. Often referred to as the "City of Doors," Granada is a wonderful town for walking and bicycling, as it features restaurants, shops and markets down every street.
Our decision to move to Central America in 2008 was tied in large part to health care. We retired when we were both 62, but Medicare isn't available until age 65. Therefore, we decided to leave the U.S. during this gap and seek good, affordable health care in a new environment.
Costa Rica certainly qualified in that regard, but Nicaragua has turned out to be even better. We chose Granada because of its beauty and proximity to the highly regarded Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas, about 45 minutes away on the outskirts of Managua. Health care here is as good as, if not better than, anything we had in our native Tennessee—and a fraction of the cost.
All that said, we didn't take our move here lightly. Like many others, we initially envisioned Nicaragua as war-torn, desolate and dangerous. The reality is something quite different.
The list of pleasant discoveries would begin with the people, some of the friendliest we've encountered anywhere. For the most part, the locals have met the gradual influx of expats, especially retirees, with open arms. Many are aware of the boon to the economy that we represent, and are tolerant of our feeble attempts at Spanish. Many of them speak good English, besides. Language, thankfully, hasn't been much of an issue.
With the exception of electricity and gasoline, expenses here are remarkably low. A good haircut can be had for about $2, and a filet mignon dinner at one of the nicer restaurants will cost about $10. Taxis will take you from one end of town to the other for 45 cents (we don't own a car), and a cold beer will run less than a dollar.
We rent a nice apartment that includes a swimming pool, pavilion and a garden filled with fruit trees. (Bananas, mangoes, avocados, lemons and coconuts are available for the picking when in season.) Our monthly budget—which includes rent, utilities, food, medications and miscellaneous items—is about $1,800. For those who want something more permanent, property is readily available and easily bought.
A typical day for us might include visits and meals with friends, excursions to nearby attractions, attendance at any number of cultural happenings, baseball games, leisurely walks or simply enjoying our home.
Getting back to health care, we pay out of pocket for all services and medications. Fees are about 20% to 30% of what they would be in the U.S. For instance, an office visit to our doctor is $15, and we get his undivided attention for as long as it takes. (He even makes house calls for the same price.) Vivian Pellas hospital accepts several international insurance plans (but not Medicare) and offers two discount plans of its own that, depending on one's age, offer considerable savings.
We often are asked about safety and security. We use common sense and feel comfortable wandering the city's streets at most any time. The prevailing wisdom is to carry little money, wear no expensive jewelry and use taxis to get around after 9 p.m. Until that hour, most families have their rocking chairs by the sidewalks after dinner to visit with neighbors and enjoy the evening breeze.
The major drawback for us is the heat. Nicaragua has only two seasons, wet and dry, and the temperatures can be oppressive during both. The rainy season runs from mid-May until mid-December and offers little relief.
Then there is the poverty. Only Haiti is poorer among Latin American countries. Nicaragua has a massive lower class—probably over half the population—and very little seems to get done by the government to benefit the poor. A goodly portion of Carol's and my retirement funds go to local charities.
Lastly, Nicaraguans are notoriously indifferent to timetables. A workman scheduled to appear at noon might, in fact, appear at noon. Or he might appear tomorrow. Or next Tuesday. Or not at all. Patience is a virtue.
We haven't been back to the States since we left and have no plans to go soon. We have had several stateside friends visit, and have received promises from several others. As we tell them all: "Come on down. The beer's cold, and the door's always open."
